The eastern wild turkey (meleagris gallopavo silvestris) had all but disappeared by 1920.  In the 1940s conservationists began programs which successfully transplanted the gobblers back to the hardwood and mixed forests of Appalachia.  They are now the most abundant species of wild turkey in the United States.
