The eastern wild turkey (meleagris gallopavo silvestris) is a shy and wary resident of the mountains and woods in Appalachia.  A flock of these big birds will break up quickly once discovered.   They will fly away with rapidly flapping wings, run quickly on their long legs or sometimes look as if they are sneaking away.
